The Persian Wars in detail

The Persian Wars (499–479 BC) were conflicts between the Persian Empire and Greek city-states. They began when Athens helped Ionian Greeks revolt against Persian rule. In 490 BC, the Athenians defeated Darius's army at the Battle of Marathon.

In 480 BC, Xerxes invaded with a large force. A small Greek force including King Leonidas of Sparta and 300 Spartans held the pass at Thermopylae before being defeated, but the Greek navy won at Salamis, and the Greeks won at Plataea in 479 BC. Victory boosted Athenian confidence and led to its golden age and the Delian League.
