Athens and Sparta in detail

Athens and Sparta were the two most powerful Greek city-states and had very different societies. Athens was a democracy for male citizens, valued art, learning and trade, had a strong navy and relied on slaves, while women had few rights.

Sparta was a military state ruled by two kings and a council of elders. Boys began training for war at age seven (the agoge), and helots (state-owned serfs) did the farming. Spartan women had more freedom and status than Athenian women. The rivalry led to the Peloponnesian War (431–404 BC), which Sparta won, weakening Greece.
