The Feudal System in detail
The feudal system was the way medieval society was organised, based on land and loyalty. The king owned all the land and gave large areas to barons in return for loyalty and military service. Barons gave land to knights, who promised to fight, and knights gave plots to peasants (villeins) who worked on the land.
At the bottom, peasants owed labour and rent to their lord and were not free to leave the manor. The Church, with the Pope at the top, held large estates and taxed with tithes. The system provided order and defence but was unequal, and it declined after the Black Death, when labour became scarce.
