Scholars made major advances: al-Khwarizmi in algebra (the word comes from his book), Ibn al-Haytham in optics, Ibn Sina (Avicenna) in medicine with The Canon of Medicine, and others in astronomy, chemistry and geography. Arabic numerals, paper-making and advanced hospitals spread to Europe. Cities such as Córdoba and Cairo had libraries and universities, and trade spread ideas.
