The Aztecs in detail
The Aztecs (Mexica) built a powerful empire in Mexico from the 14th century. Their capital Tenochtitlan was built on an island in Lake Texcoco, linked by causeways, with canals, floating gardens (chinampas), markets and temples, and was one of the largest cities in the world.
Society was ranked, with an emperor, nobles, priests, warriors, farmers and slaves. They worshipped many gods and practised human sacrifice, which they believed kept the Sun moving. Conquered peoples paid tribute. In 1519, Hernán Cortés arrived with Spanish soldiers, allied with enemies of the Aztecs, and with the help of disease, took Tenochtitlan in 1521.
