What is Titration?

Within Chemistry, which covers atoms, bonding, reactions, the periodic table, organic chemistry and the chemistry of everyday life, this topic explains Titration. Chemistry links what you can see in the lab to the particles and bonds behind it, so each topic here shows that link in a model.

Check that you can explain Titration in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding Titration helps you explain why substances behave as they do, from cleaning products and food to medicines.

Titration in detail

A titration is a method to find the exact volume of one solution needed to react completely with a known volume of another. A pipette measures the solution into a conical flask, with a few drops of indicator, and a burette adds the other solution until the colour changes at the end point.

Repeat until you have concordant results (within 0.1 cm³) and use the mean. Then use moles = concentration × volume to calculate the unknown concentration, using the ratio from the balanced equation. Titrations are used to measure acidity in foods, the strength of cleaning products and the purity of medicines.

How the interactive helps you understand Titration

Click a step, or use the Previous and Next buttons, to move through the sequence one stage at a time. Auto-play moves on for you.

Before you change anything, predict the result. Then change one value at a time and check whether your prediction was right. This is a quick way to build a correct mental model of Titration.
