What is Thermal Decomposition?

Within Chemistry, which covers atoms, bonding, reactions, the periodic table, organic chemistry and the chemistry of everyday life, this topic explains Thermal Decomposition. Chemistry links what you can see in the lab to the particles and bonds behind it, so each topic here shows that link in a model.

Check that you can explain Thermal Decomposition in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding Thermal Decomposition helps you explain why substances behave as they do, from cleaning products and food to medicines.

Thermal Decomposition in detail

Thermal decomposition is a reaction in which a compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances when heated. Metal carbonates decompose into a metal oxide and carbon dioxide, for example CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂, which is used to make quicklime from limestone.

The more reactive the metal, the more stable the carbonate: Group 1 carbonates, except lithium, are not decomposed by a Bunsen flame, whereas copper carbonate easily turns from green to black copper oxide. The test is limewater turning cloudy. Thermal decomposition is also used in making cement and in some airbags.

How the interactive helps you understand Thermal Decomposition

Watch the reaction model in the interactive. Use any sliders or buttons it offers to change the values and see how the reaction model responds.

Before you change anything, predict the result. Then change one value at a time and check whether your prediction was right. This is a quick way to build a correct mental model of Thermal Decomposition.
