The Moon and Its Phases in detail

The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite, about a quarter of Earth's diameter, orbiting at about 384,000 km and taking about 27.3 days to circle us. It probably formed when a Mars-sized body hit the early Earth, and it has no atmosphere, with a surface of craters and dark plains (maria).

The Moon does not make its own light but reflects sunlight, and half of it is always lit. The phases, new moon, crescent, first quarter, gibbous, full and back, depend on how much of the lit half we can see from Earth as it orbits, with a cycle of about 29.5 days. The Moon's gravity causes the tides, and the same side always faces Earth.
