What is The Immune System?

Within Biology, which covers cells, the human body, genetics, evolution, plants and ecosystems: the science of living things, this topic explains The Immune System. Biology topics show how living things work, from the cell up to whole ecosystems, with models you can explore step by step.

Check that you can explain The Immune System in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding The Immune System helps you explain how living things stay alive and respond to their surroundings, which is central to biology exams.

The Immune System in detail

The body has barriers against pathogens: skin, mucus and cilia in the airways, and stomach acid. If pathogens enter, white blood cells respond. Phagocytes engulf and digest them, lymphocytes produce antibodies specific to the antigens on the pathogen, and antitoxins neutralise toxins.

After infection, memory cells remain, so a second exposure leads to a faster and stronger response, which is why you usually get some illnesses only once. The immune system can fail, as in HIV, which attacks white blood cells, or overreact in allergies. Understanding it explains vaccines and how the body fights disease.

How the interactive helps you understand The Immune System

Watch the cell model in the interactive. Use any sliders or buttons it offers to change the values and see how the cell model responds.

Before you change anything, predict the result. Then change one value at a time and check whether your prediction was right. This is a quick way to build a correct mental model of The Immune System.
