The Home Front in detail

During World War Two, ordinary people in Britain contributed to the war effort on the "home front". Air raids, the Blitz (1940–41), bombed cities such as London, Coventry and Liverpool, and civilians took shelter in Anderson shelters and Tube stations. Blackouts hid cities from bombers. About 3 million children were evacuated to the countryside.

Rationing guaranteed fair shares of food and clothing, and people were encouraged to "Dig for Victory". Women worked in factories, farms and services, and men aged 18–41 were conscripted. The Home Guard defended the country. Propaganda kept morale high. The war changed society and led to demands for better welfare, resulting in the NHS.
