The Cold War in detail

The Cold War (c.1945–1991) was a period of tension and rivalry between the USA and its allies (capitalist, democratic) and the USSR and its allies (communist), which never led to direct war between them. After World War Two, Stalin took control of Eastern Europe, and Churchill said an "iron curtain" had descended across Europe.

The USA responded with the Truman Doctrine of containment and Marshall Plan aid, and NATO (1949) faced the Warsaw Pact (1955). The superpowers competed in an arms race, spying, the space race and proxy wars in Korea and Vietnam. Crises included the Berlin Blockade and Cuban Missile Crisis, and tensions eased in détente.
