Shakespeare's Life and Theatre in detail
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, and wrote about 37 plays and 154 sonnets, as an actor and playwright in London. He worked with the Lord Chamberlain's Men (later the King's Men) and the Globe Theatre, built in 1599. He died in 1616.
Plays are grouped into comedies, tragedies, histories and romances. The Globe had an open-air round stage with a standing audience, the "groundlings", with no scenery, women's roles played by boys, and performances in daylight. Audiences were noisy and included all social classes. Understanding the theatre and the beliefs of Elizabethan and Jacobean times, such as the divine right of kings, helps in reading his work.
