What is Settlement Patterns?

Within Geography, which covers maps, landforms, weather, climate, population and settlements: understand how our planet and people connect, this topic explains Settlement Patterns. Geography explains how places, people and natural processes connect, so each topic here combines a clear definition with a visual model.

Check that you can explain Settlement Patterns in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding Settlement Patterns helps you explain patterns on maps and in the news, and make reasoned decisions about places and environments.

Settlement Patterns in detail

A settlement is a place where people live, and its pattern can be nucleated (clustered around a point), linear (along a road, river or coast) or dispersed (scattered). Sites are the actual land the settlement is built on, and the situation is its position relative to surrounding features.

Factors affecting the site include a water supply, dry flat land, building materials, defence, fuel, fertile soil and routes. Examples are settlements at river crossings, wet point sites and defensive hill-top sites. Today, transport and technology have reduced the importance of some of these, but the location remains important.
