Romeo and Juliet in detail

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy set in Verona about two teenagers from feuding families, the Montagues and Capulets, who fall in love and marry in secret. A fight leads Romeo to kill Tybalt, and he is banished. Juliet takes a potion to appear dead to avoid marrying Paris, but Romeo, not receiving the friar's message, believes she is dead and kills himself, and Juliet then does too.

Themes include love and hate, fate and free will, youth and age, and conflict. Dramatic irony, imagery of light and dark, and the prologue's description of "star-cross'd lovers" shape the play. The families' reconciliation comes too late.
