River Processes and Landforms in detail

Rivers erode, transport and deposit. In the upper course, vertical erosion creates steep V-shaped valleys, interlocking spurs, waterfalls and gorges. Waterfalls form where a river flows over hard rock above softer rock, which erodes faster, creating a plunge pool and retreating gorge.

In the middle and lower course, lateral erosion and deposition create meanders, with erosion on the outside bend and deposition on the inside. Oxbow lakes form when a meander is cut off. Floodplains and levees develop from flooding and deposition, and deltas form at river mouths where the river meets the sea and deposits sediment.
