What is Reacting Masses?

Within Chemistry, which covers atoms, bonding, reactions, the periodic table, organic chemistry and the chemistry of everyday life, this topic explains Reacting Masses. Chemistry links what you can see in the lab to the particles and bonds behind it, so each topic here shows that link in a model.

Check that you can explain Reacting Masses in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding Reacting Masses helps you explain why substances behave as they do, from cleaning products and food to medicines.

Reacting Masses in detail

Using a balanced equation, you can calculate the mass of a product formed or reactant needed. The steps are: write the balanced equation, convert the known mass to moles, use the mole ratio from the equation, then convert moles of the other substance to mass.

For example, in 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO, 48 g of magnesium (2 moles) produces 2 moles of magnesium oxide, which is 80 g. A limiting reactant is the one that is used up first and determines the amount of product. These calculations are used in industry to avoid waste.

How the interactive helps you understand Reacting Masses

Watch the bar chart in the interactive. Use any sliders or buttons it offers to change the values and see how the bar chart responds.

Before you change anything, predict the result. Then change one value at a time and check whether your prediction was right. This is a quick way to build a correct mental model of Reacting Masses.
