What is Place Value?

Within Mathematics, which covers numbers, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics from first principles to exam level, this topic explains Place Value. Maths builds step by step, so each topic here gives you a rule, a picture and a quick check you can use on homework and in exams.

Check that you can explain Place Value in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding Place Value gives you a reliable method you will reuse in later maths units, in science lessons and in data work.

Place Value in detail

In our base-ten system, each digit is worth its face value multiplied by the value of its place: units, tens, hundreds, thousands and so on, with each place worth ten times the one to its right. In 3,482 the 4 stands for 4 hundreds, or 400, not just 4.

The same idea continues to the right of the decimal point, where the places are tenths, hundredths and thousandths. Zero acts as a placeholder, which is why 305 and 35 are very different numbers. Secure place value makes column addition, multiplying by powers of ten, rounding and decimals much easier.
