What is Mutations?

Within Biology, which covers cells, the human body, genetics, evolution, plants and ecosystems: the science of living things, this topic explains Mutations. Biology topics show how living things work, from the cell up to whole ecosystems, with models you can explore step by step.

Check that you can explain Mutations in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding Mutations helps you explain how living things stay alive and respond to their surroundings, which is central to biology exams.

Mutations in detail

A mutation is a change in the DNA sequence of a gene. It can happen randomly when DNA is copied, or be caused by ionising radiation (such as X-rays and UV) or chemical mutagens (such as chemicals in tobacco smoke).

Most mutations have no effect or are harmful, because the protein may no longer work, but a few are beneficial and may give an advantage, and these are the source of new alleles for evolution. Mutations in body cells can cause cancer, while those in gametes can be inherited. A change in one base can alter an amino acid, as in sickle cell anaemia.

How the interactive helps you understand Mutations

Watch the DNA model in the interactive. Use any sliders or buttons it offers to change the values and see how the DNA model responds.

Before you change anything, predict the result. Then change one value at a time and check whether your prediction was right. This is a quick way to build a correct mental model of Mutations.
