What is Moments and Levers?

Within Physics, which covers forces, energy, waves, electricity, magnetism, light and space explained through motion and experiments, this topic explains Moments and Levers. Physics topics explain how things move, push, heat up and carry energy, so each one here pairs a definition with a live model you can change.

Check that you can explain Moments and Levers in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding Moments and Levers explains how the physical world behaves, from sport and transport to electricity and medicine.

Moments and Levers in detail

The moment of a force about a pivot is the force multiplied by the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the force: M = Fd, measured in newton metres (N m). Moments tend to cause rotation, either clockwise or anticlockwise.

For an object in equilibrium, the sum of clockwise moments equals the sum of anticlockwise moments. Levers use this principle to multiply force: a long handle on a spanner or a crowbar means a small force at a large distance balances a large force close to the pivot. Seesaws, wheelbarrows and scissors are everyday examples.

How the interactive helps you understand Moments and Levers

Watch the lever in the interactive. Use any sliders or buttons it offers to change the values and see how the lever responds.

Before you change anything, predict the result. Then change one value at a time and check whether your prediction was right. This is a quick way to build a correct mental model of Moments and Levers.
