What is Group 1: Alkali Metals?

Within Chemistry, which covers atoms, bonding, reactions, the periodic table, organic chemistry and the chemistry of everyday life, this topic explains Group 1: Alkali Metals. Chemistry links what you can see in the lab to the particles and bonds behind it, so each topic here shows that link in a model.

Check that you can explain Group 1: Alkali Metals in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding Group 1: Alkali Metals helps you explain why substances behave as they do, from cleaning products and food to medicines.

Group 1: Alkali Metals in detail

The alkali metals (lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium) are soft, shiny metals with low density and low melting points. Each has one outer electron, which it loses easily to form a 1+ ion.

They react vigorously with water to produce hydrogen and a metal hydroxide, which forms an alkaline solution: 2Na + 2H₂O → 2NaOH + H₂. Reactivity increases down the group, because the outer electron is further from the nucleus and is lost more easily. Lithium fizzes, sodium melts into a ball, and potassium ignites with a lilac flame. They are stored under oil.
