What is Earthquakes and Seismology?

Within Earth & Environmental Science, which covers our planet, its resources and ecosystems, and how people can protect the environment, this topic explains Earthquakes and Seismology. Earth and environment topics show how the planet’s systems shape landscapes, climate and life, with models that make these processes visible.

Check that you can explain Earthquakes and Seismology in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding Earthquakes and Seismology helps you explain the environment around you and weigh up how people can protect it.

Earthquakes and Seismology in detail

Earthquakes occur when stress built up along faults is suddenly released, sending out seismic waves. The focus is where the rupture starts, and the epicentre is the point directly above on the surface. P-waves (primary) are compressional and fastest, S-waves (secondary) are shear waves, and surface waves cause most damage.

Seismologists record waves with seismographs. Magnitude, measured on the moment magnitude scale, shows energy released, with each whole number about 32 times more energy, and the Mercalli scale measures the effects. Most occur at plate boundaries. Damage depends on strength, depth, ground type and building design, and earthquakes can trigger tsunamis and landslides. Prediction is not possible, but hazard mapping and preparedness reduce risks.

How the interactive helps you understand Earthquakes and Seismology

Watch the tectonic plates in the interactive. Use any sliders or buttons it offers to change the values and see how the tectonic plates responds.

Before you change anything, predict the result. Then change one value at a time and check whether your prediction was right. This is a quick way to build a correct mental model of Earthquakes and Seismology.
