What is Clouds and Precipitation?

Within Earth & Environmental Science, which covers our planet, its resources and ecosystems, and how people can protect the environment, this topic explains Clouds and Precipitation. Earth and environment topics show how the planet’s systems shape landscapes, climate and life, with models that make these processes visible.

Check that you can explain Clouds and Precipitation in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding Clouds and Precipitation helps you explain the environment around you and weigh up how people can protect it.

Clouds and Precipitation in detail

Clouds form when air rises and cools to its dew point, so that water vapour condenses onto tiny particles (condensation nuclei) into droplets or ice crystals. Air rises by heating (convection), over hills (relief) or at weather fronts. Main types are cirrus (high, wispy), cumulus (heaped), stratus (layered) and cumulonimbus (storm clouds).

Precipitation falls when droplets grow large enough to fall, as rain, drizzle, snow, sleet or hail, depending on temperature. In cold clouds, ice crystals grow and may melt on the way down. Convectional, relief and frontal rainfall are the main types. Precipitation supplies fresh water, but too much or too little causes floods or droughts.

How the interactive helps you understand Clouds and Precipitation

Watch the cycle in the interactive. Use any sliders or buttons it offers to change the values and see how the cycle responds.

Before you change anything, predict the result. Then change one value at a time and check whether your prediction was right. This is a quick way to build a correct mental model of Clouds and Precipitation.
