Brazil in detail
Brazil is the largest country in South America, with the Amazon rainforest in the north, the Pantanal wetlands, the Brazilian Highlands and a long Atlantic coast. It is a newly emerging economy with strengths in agriculture (soya, coffee, beef), mining and manufacturing, and a large population of over 210 million.
Most people live in cities along the coast, such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where favelas (informal settlements) exist beside wealthy areas, showing inequality. Deforestation in the Amazon is a major global concern because of biodiversity and climate. Brazil is rich in culture and hosts major events such as the Olympics and World Cup.
